Sleep anxiety, which is also called evening anxiety or nighttime anxiety, is when you feel stressed, worried, or scared before bed that makes it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. People who have sleep anxiety may fear that they won't be able to fall asleep, that their sleep won't be good, or that they will think about things that happened in the past or will happen in the future too much, which makes it hard for them to relax and fall asleep. This worry can show up in the body as fast heartbeat, sweats, or agitation, which can make it even harder to sleep. Stress, pressure from work or school, relationship problems, or health worries can all make it hard to sleep. Managing sleep anxiety means learning how to relax, making a relaxing bedtime routine, dealing with underlying stresses, and, if necessary, getting help from a healthcare professional to come up with ways to deal with things and get better sleep.
